Until the 19th century, the collection and cultivation of exotic citrus plants in glass heated greenhouses was an absolute luxury and reserved only for the richest nobles. Rare and valuable "Hesperides" were kept in the Habsburg orangeries - from the Boboli Garden of Palazzo Pitti in Florence to the imperial residence of Schönbrunn.
